How Many Guppies Can You Keep Together?

There is no reliable “one guppy per X litres” rule. Start with a modest group in a suitably sized, cycled aquarium and judge stocking by adult size, usable swimming space, filtration, water tests and behaviour. For a first tank, I recommend around 60 litres or more before deciding on the group—not filling a smaller tank to a calculated maximum.

The number on the box tells you the aquarium's nominal volume. It doesn't tell you whether the filter is mature, whether there are other fish inside or how many babies will arrive next month.

Why a simple stocking formula falls short

Two aquariums with the same capacity can behave very differently. One may have open swimming space and established filtration; another may be crowded with decorations and only recently set up.

The fish matter too. Adult females are larger than males. A tank with other livebearers already contains more waste-producing animals than a guppy-only tank, even if the guppies themselves are small.

Rules based on inches of fish per gallon hide all of those differences. They can make an exact answer look scientific when it is really an estimate with most of the useful information missing.

A cautious starting example

For an otherwise empty, mature aquarium of around 60 litres, a small group such as five or six adult males can be a starting plan to discuss with the supplier. It is an example, not a guaranteed capacity or a target you must reach immediately.

Check the actual dimensions, filtration, the size of the fish and the conditions they are coming from. Add stock cautiously and monitor ammonia and nitrite afterwards. If the filter cannot yet handle the waste, the tank is not ready for that group regardless of its dimensions.

If you are still choosing the aquarium, start with tank size and shape before deciding how many fish to buy.

Think about the sexes before the colours

A male-only group avoids breeding and can make a colourful display, but you still need to watch for persistent chasing. See keeping only male guppies for what to look for.

For a mixed group, roughly two or three females per male is a useful starting ratio to reduce concentrated attention on one female. It doesn't guarantee calm behaviour, and it isn't a reason to squeeze additional fish into an already full tank.

Previously mated females may produce young without males present. Buying only females is therefore not a reliable way to guarantee a fry-free aquarium.

Count the next generation as well

Fry start small, but they grow, eat and add waste. Repeated broods can turn a comfortable group into a maintenance problem before the tank looks obviously crowded.

Have a plan for growing space and rehoming before breeding. Don't rely on adult fish eating enough babies to keep the population at a convenient number. Survival varies, especially in a planted aquarium.

How do you know the group is too much?

Look for persistent crowding or harassment, fish unable to feed normally, and water quality that becomes difficult to maintain. Test rather than guessing: ammonia and nitrite should remain undetectable, and nitrate trends help you judge the maintenance load.

Repeated poor readings do not prove overstocking on their own. Overfeeding, filter problems and an immature aquarium also need investigating. Correct the cause rather than buying a stronger filter and carrying on unchanged.
